As the August 6 deadline approaches for Niger's military leaders to release President Mohamed Bazoum, they've sought assistance from the Russian mercenary group, Wagner. The ECOWAS bloc has warned of potential military intervention if the president isn't released. This move towards Russia came after General Salifou Mody's visit to Mali, post which he cautioned against foreign intervention. Key military appointments and adjustments have been made in Niger amidst these tensions. Meanwhile, Russia has warned against external meddling in Niger, while France has supported ECOWAS's efforts, emphasising the risk to regional stability. Both Nigeria and Algeria have advised against military intervention, suggesting diplomatic solutions instead. Recent talks between ECOWAS and Niger's military representatives failed to reach a consensus, and ECOWAS defence chiefs are now considering a military intervention plan.
