Nison-in temple is a Buddhist temple of Tendai sect, located in Sagano, Ukyo-ku, Kyoto city. its Sango(honorific mountain name prefixed to a temple’s name) is “Ogura-yama”, and official name is “Ogura-yama Nison-kyo-in Kedai-ji”. The origin of the name, “Nison-in temple” comes from the two Buddhas worshipped as the principal images of this temple: “Shaka”(Buddha) and “Amida”(Amitabha Buddha) (both of them are considered important cultural property.) It is said to have been built around 834-847, under the instructions of the Emperor at that time.
The entrance path, which runs in a straight line for 200m from the Somon-gate is called “Momiji no Baba” (Autumn leaf horse-riding ground), and is known as one of the best spots in the Arashiyama area for viewing the leaves changing color in the fall.
