Who’s intimated by the thought of installing veneer?
I know I was my first time doing this 🙋♂️
After doing this process many times I can share that the process is really very straight forward. Applying new veneer can actually be a tremendous time savings compared to trying repair a beat up surface ex: burn throughs, deep scratches, etc.
Here’s the steps:
1. Prepare your workpiece, ensure the surface is clean and fix any damage as needed
2. Sand the surface with 400 grit sand paper and remove any dust
3. Spray @3M Super 77 on both the back of the veneer and the work surface.
4. Take a 15 minute break.
5. Apply the veneer. Work in a linear fashion applying the veneer starting on once side of the piece and slowly lay it down. I like to use one hand to press the veneer down while the other controls how much veneer is contacting the workpiece. Take your time, this step is critical to avoid air bubbles
6.Press the veneer down to firmly apply it and press out any air pockets. I use a scrap piece of plywood with a rounded over edge, a J roller works as well.
7. Trim the excess veneer. This can be done with a sharp razor blade or router with a flush trim bit.
That’s it, nothing fancy about it.
Once the veneer is installed you’d continue on your restoration schedule as normal.
To make this process even easier you can use PSA veneer which is fancy talk for peel and stick. Using this type of veneer removes the guesswork of adding your own adhesive and is the most beginner friendly version to install in my opinion.
