Barnstorming Old Cup 3rd Round Replay between promotion chasing 2nd Division Middlesbrough and reigning Division 1 Champions Everton in early February 1988. Having drawn 1-1 at Goodison the previous Saturday, the two teams meet at Ayresome Park for the right to face Liverpool in the 5th Round.
After a goal-less first half, Dave Watson gave Everton the lead which they held until deep into time-added on to injury time in the 90th + minute when Tony Mowbray headed in from Gary Hamiltons corner to take the game to extra time. Thousands of Boro fans who had left minutes earlier thinking the game was up streamed back into the ground to see Boro take the lead with the bizarrest of scrambled goals from 2nd half sub Alan Kernaghan. Both teams had further chances with Neville Southall and Stephen Pears making a string of fine saves. Southalls tip onto the bar from Stuart Ripleys diving header was particularly notable. Deep into injury time at the end of extra time though Evertons England winger Trevor Steven did what Mowbray had earlier done at the Holgate end and scored a header to level the game. With barely enough time to re-start the game, referee Keren Barrett blew the final whistle on a classic game that would live long in the memory of the twenty five and a half thousand that had been there to see it. Back to Goodison Park in a week or so for a 2nd replay.
