Many people who have spinal cord injury (SCI) may be able to walk, particularly those with lower-level or incomplete injuries.
The 6 Minute Walk Test (6MWT) is a self-paced test that measures the distance a patient can walk on a flat, hard surface in 6 minutes. Through measuring the speed that people with SCI can comfortably and safely walk, you will be able to assess if they should only walk in their own home, or if they are safe to ambulate outside in the community.
This test was developed by the American Thoracic Society in 2002 and is used in many populations including people with chronic pulmonary obstructive disease (COPD), stroke, multiple sclerosis and SCI (usually people with incomplete SCI).
There are standardized instructions, appropriateness, and minimal equipment necessary to complete the 6MWT with your clients.
