In this video, we'll delve into the fascinating science of emotions and explore the seven basic emotions that are hypothesized by neuroscientist Jaak Panksepp to be produced by separate neural circuits in the brain. According to the Panksepp, each of these emotions has a dedicated system in the subcortical regions of the brains of mammals. By activating these particular regions, a specific and intense emotional experience can be produced. In this video, I explain each of the seven systems, including their basic neuroanatomy and what happens when they're stimulated. From the RAGE system that triggers violent reactions to the PLAY system that's crucial for healthy childhood brain development, we explore the fascinating and complex world of emotions and how they play out in the brain.

NOTE: In the video, I explain that this is a contentious area of neuroscience and Panksepp's perspective has been critiqued by some, including neuroscientist Lisa Feldman Barrett. In a future video, I will explain her theory and how it differs from Panksepp's.
