Mladic gets frightened refugees to perform for media
and denies he has any plans to go for Gorazde
Bosnian Serb military commander, General Ratko Mladic, said on
Wednesday (26/7) that his forces had no immediate plans to attack
the Muslim enlave of Gorazde, adding that America's decision to
lift the arms embargo would have little affect in an area already
flooded with weapons. Mladic made the comments as he supervised
the bussing of Muslim civilians from the fallen enclave of Zepa.
Reacting to the US Senate's vote to lift the arms embargo, Mladic
said: "What we need here is wisdom, cool heads, weapons to quiet
down. What we need to do is to sit down and agree on lasting and
unconditional peace and then discuss outstanding issues." Mladic
was on Tuesday (25/7) charged with genocide, war crimes and crimes
against humanity by the UN Human Rights tribunal in The Hague. He
brushed the charges aside, saying: "I am used to that. I am a man
defending his people." Meantime more than 50 exhausted Muslim
refugees from Zepa arrived in Sarajevo on Thursday. The group,
consisting of the elderly, women and children and the injured,
were brought out of the fallen UN-designated "safe area" by UN
convoy. They arrived at the city's Kosevo hospital after an
arduous journey through Bosnian Serb-held territory. Eight of the
refugees were seriously injured.
