Ku Hung-Ming (1857-1928) was a remarkable scholar, known for his deep understanding of both Western and Chinese cultures. One of his most significant contributions to Sinology was his translation of the "Analects of Confucius", titled "The Discourses and Sayings of Confucius". Unlike the translations of his predecessor, James Legge, Ku Hung-Ming approached Confucius’s teachings from a uniquely Chinese perspective, offering insights into the cultural and philosophical depth of Confucianism.
In "The Discourses and Sayings of Confucius", Ku Hung-Ming did not follow the exact order of the original text as seen in Legge’s translations. Instead, he reordered some of the passages to better reflect the flow of Confucius's thought, as understood within Chinese traditions. This reorganization aims to help readers, particularly those unfamiliar with the structure of classical Chinese texts, grasp the underlying principles of Confucian philosophy more easily. Ku Hung-Ming’s translation retains the elegance and simplicity of Confucius’s language, but presents it in a way that emphasizes the importance of personal virtue, morality, and governance, values central to Confucian thought.
In this video the entire volume of "The Discourses and Sayings of Confucius" with its footnotes and summary are presented. Each video will begin with a reading of the original Chinese text, followed by Ku Hung-Ming’s translation.
