The Peaceful Revolution of the late 1980s in the German Democratic Republic (GDR) paved the way for the fall of the Berlin Wall and the unification of East and West Germany. As we approach the 30th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall, the Goethe-Institut is planning a series of educational programs and exhibitions to help familiarize students of German (middle school, high school and college) in the United States with the events that drastically changed the flow of contemporary German and European history.
A booklet for students of German, available in Fall 2019, features, among many other tasks, the oral histories of two witnesses that were part of the peaceful revolution in the GDR and currently live in the US: David Gill, the incumbent consul general of the Federal Republic of Germany in New York City and Diana Erinna, who teaches German as a foreign language in Boston, Massachusetts.
