Closing Keynote: Beyond the Physical Wounds: The Psychological Impact of Injury
Following a traumatic injury, individuals face a heightened risk for a range of mental health disorders, with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression, and anxiety being among the most common. Mental health is intrinsically linked to recovery, playing a crucial role in shaping overall outcomes and quality of life. This talk will explore the prevalence of psychopathology post-injury and the diverse ways in which mental health concerns manifest in trauma survivors. We will delve into the various risk factors—including biological, psychological, and social influences—and the socioecological contexts that shape psychological recovery. In examining this spectrum of risk, special attention will be given to the social determinants of health, such as access to care and patient-centered care, which contribute to mental health disparities among trauma survivors. By synthesizing the latest research, this talk will demonstrate how findings can be translated into clinical practice, focusing on how health systems can be leveraged to reduce poor mental health outcomes and address inequities in care.
