월드뉴스: 아프리카 기니서 쿠데타 시도…대통령 억류된듯
Let's take a look at what's going on in 'The World Now'.
We start things off in West Africa,... where Special forces soldiers in Guinea ousted long-serving President Alpha Conde on Sunday,... announcing that they had dissolved the country's government and constitution,... while closing its land and air borders.
"We will dismiss institutions, our government is dissolved, the closing of terrestrial borders is still effective for a week. And we will see after that, what to do about our air borders."
The announcement comes after gunfire erupted and fighting broke out near the presidential palace in the capital Conakry on Sunday morning.
Hours later,... videos were seen on social media,... showing president Conde in a room surrounded by army special forces.
Conde won a third term in October after changing the constitution to allow him to remain in power.
That led to violent protests from the opposition.
The government's recent decision to increase taxes to replenish state coffers and raise the price of fuel by 20-percent only caused more widespread frustration.
Both the UN and Nigeria,... the region's dominant power,... condemned the takeover, although it's still unclear if the military had seized total control of the country.
Satellite images revealed a suspected oil spill in the Bay Marchard area of the Gulf of Mexico on Sunday,... after Hurricane Ida wreaked havoc in the area last week.
According to the U.S. Coast Guard... satellite images from U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration revealed a miles-long brownish-black slick spreading in coastal water,... over a kilometer off Port Fourchan, Louisiana,... an oil and gas hub.
Images also appear to show the oil spill drifting more than 19 kilometers eastward along the Gulf Coast.
The Coast Guard added that the Clean Gulf Associates have responded to the suspected oil spill,... and have begun sending a private dive team to locate the source of the spill.
And finally over in Spain,... bulls were seen running through the streets of Villaseca de la Sagra again,... as the Spanish village hosted its first bull running fiesta in the country,... since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Following health restrictions,... up to 900 runners are allowed to race against the bulls each day during the festival which runs from September 5th to the 12th.
Officials added that the crowd is also limited to 13-hundred people per run.
And for the participants,... they don't mind some restrictions,... as long as the tradition returns.
"We were a little afraid at first but it looks like people have behaved and followed restrictions so it's good, I think we will all be fine."
Meanwhile, the much more renowned bull running festival in Pamplona has been cancelled for the second straight year due to the pandemic.
