Nations Neighborhood Assassociation is taking action after a tanker truck crashed on Centennial Boulevard on Wednesday.
Residents say it is common for truck drivers to speed through their area.The road Tri-Star's tanker was on is 35 miles per hour. Police say 33-year-old Jason Frizell was behind the wheel.
Marc Taylor, resident says, " An irresponsible driver happened to be speeding and lost control."
Taylor and other neighbors, like Michael Kenner assessed the damage today.
Michael Kenner says, "Watched a tanker blow a tire and almost jack knife in a school zone and I thought, 'My God this is the most unsafe street in my life... how do we fix it?"
For the last month, the group started preparing for an event to introduce calming measures to 51st Avenue traffic and pedestrian safety.
Kenner says, "We're going to layout these part lets along the road to show people how they can sit and interact with traffic in total equilibrium."
Taylor says, " I see parents walking their kids to school and these truckers are blazing through on 51st...they cant even get across the road without safety, there's no crosswalks."
Residents say they will use gorilla or tactical urban-ism to narrow the street down from four lanes to two, add bike lanes, crosswalks and 10mph speed zones for one day.
Taylor says, " We need to figure out a solution very quickly before something this tragic happens again in the neighborhood and next time it could be potentially fatal."
The event is next Saturday from 10:00 A.M - 10:00 P.M.
A post event will take place at the Stone Fox.
