Michelangelo Buonarroti was born in 1475.
When his mother died when he was six years old, he was left in the care of his nanny, whose husband was a masonry worker.
Michelangelo later recalled in his writings that from a young age playing with chisels and hammers was his greatest enjoyment.
At the age of 13, he enters as a pupil of Domenico Ghirlandaio in Florence, but leaves after only one year because of his talent superior to his master.
Michelangelo later said that he did not learn much from his teacher, Ghirlandaio.
After that, Michelangelo was noticed by Lorenzo de' Medici, the head of the Medici family, by chance, and studied at the Palazzo Medici.
However, with the death of Lorenzo de' Medici, he no longer enjoyed Medici patronage.
Later, he made a forgery identical to the “Sleeping Cupid,” a statue excavated from an ancient Greek site, and sold it to Cardinal Raffaele Riario, a high priest in Rome.
However, he is soon discovered as a forgery and taken to Rome.
The cardinal knew that it was a forgery, but he saw Michelangelo's amazing talent and gave him a chance to sculpt, and the work that was created was the Pieta.
Pieta is a scene in which the Virgin Mary holds the dead Jesus in her chest, expressing the beautiful appearance of the Virgin Mary and the crucified Jesus.
The size of the Pieta is about 2m, and the size of the Virgin Mary is about twice the size of Jesus, which is out of proportion, but Michelangelo deliberately made it larger to give the work a balanced beauty.
If you compare it with contemporary works of Pieta, you can understand the difference and the reason.
Another characteristic of Michelangelo is the youthful face of the Virgin Mary, the balance of the fingers holding Jesus up and the expression of the crumpled hem of his clothes, the nail marks on his hands that stand out for realism, the delicate hair, and the face and expression of Jesus as if he had rested. To this day, Michelangelo's work is regarded as the best of the 'Pieta' sculptures.
Because of Pieta, which was produced at the age of 24, he instantly rises to the ranks of masters, but people do not even remember the name Michelangelo.
Then Michelangelo secretly entered the church that night and put his name on the collar of the Virgin Mary.
