COP28 President Sultan al-Jaber said on Thursday that leaders "must look for ways and ensure the inclusion of the role of fossil fuels" in climate talks in Dubai. Minutes after taking the gavel on the first day of climate negotiations, al-Jaber referred to the need for change in the way the world gets its energy.
“I know there are strong views on the idea of including language on fossil fuels,’’ al-Jaber said. "I ask you all to work together. Be flexible. Find common ground. Come forward with solutions and achieve consensus.”
Al-Jaber, a 50-year-old longtime climate envoy, is a trusted confidant of UAE leader Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan. He's been behind tens of billions of dollars spent or pledged toward renewable energy in the federation of seven sheikhdoms on the Arabian Peninsula.
ADNOC, the state oil company headed by al-Jaber, has plans to increase its production of crude oil from 4 million barrels a day up to 5 million, boosting its production of carbon-emitting crude oil and natural gas.
COP27 President Sameh Shoukry opened the climate conference on Thursday and handed over the reins to al-Jaber. The Middle East will be playing host to its second straight United Nations climate conference over the next two weeks, with countries hoping to agree on new ways to keep the planet from heating too much by the end of the century.
