Hi, It’s Mike Yublosky.
And today I am going to talk about Free File Sync, a program that allows me to synchronize my files on two external hard drives that I use to back up my data each night.
Data is very important to me because I can take one of these external drives and plug it into another computer and be ready to go at a moment’s notice in case something happens to my main computer.
I have a 1 terabyte external hard drive that is always connected to my computer and a half terabyte SSD external drive that I disconnect from my computer every night.
Free File Sync is an Open Source, downloadable program and here is how it works.
In the compare side I will first pick a folder that I have been working on during the day and I do that by clicking the browse button and selecting the folder.
Next I select the folder I want to synchronize that data with. And if you notice I have selected the mirror arrow on the synchronize tab. This allows me to take the files from compare (side) and make sure it is (they are) exactly copied to the other folder. Once again I select the folder I wish to mirror on the right side, or (the) synchronize side.
My next step is to compare both of the folders by clicking on the compare button. As you can see there’s quite a few folders (s/b files!) I have been working on this day.
My next step is to click on the synchronize tab on the right side and the program gives me an alert as to how to many files are affected by this.
Sometimes if there are a lot of files it will give me a warning but I just override that.
Watch how fast File Sync works.
This of course a manual backup and we will discuss automatic backups at a later date.
