Pad-Yatra was inspired by a week-long walking pilgrimage (pad-yatra) Barkha participated in from her hometown in Gujarat to the temple of Goddess Bahuchara.
This work is a response to the duality Barkha experienced while on the yatra. While a community gathered to pray to Maa Bahuchara be included in her merciful glance, several members of the same community shunned interactions with the descendants of the Goddess, transgender or hijrahs, creating a separateness.
Barkha asks, how convenient is it for us to seek blessings from hijrahs, but shun them? Is it because WE are afraid? Is it because society drives us to fear them?
