It is estimated miners have worked for Alaskan placer gold at nearly 1,000 localities in the state, and some are very remote. A “placer district” in Alaska may cover hundreds of square miles and consist of many streams and drainages that all contain gold. Most of Alaska's placer gold deposits are associated with Mesozoic granitic rocks that have intruded older rocks of Precambrian, Paleozoic, and Mesozoic ages. This belt of intrusive rocks extends from the Seward Peninsula all the way to Canada.
