The mission of the Pain Network is to contribute through basic, clinical, evaluative and epidemiological research to the improvement of the quality of life of Quebecers who suffer from chronic pain.
The project presented by Pre Laura Stone was funded through the QPRN Pilot Projects Program.
A major contributor to chronic low back pain (cLBP) is degeneration of the intervertebral discs (IVDs). Degenerating IVDs are innervated by pain-sensing fibers called nociceptors. We hypothesize that mediators released by degenerating discs or present in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) of participants with cLBP directly activate nociceptors. A short-term goal is to establish an assay to determine the effect of exposure to factors (1) found in the CSF or (2) released by degenerating human discs on nociceptors. The long-term goals are to identify the mediators and determine if blocking them reduces signs of pain in a pre-clinical model.
