This 1 minute video shows you the contour creation tool from the GRASS toolset inside QGIS 3.
QGIS is a great way to run such tools (GRASS, SAGA) and there is a lot of functionality in there.
In the video I take a SRTM geotiff and create a set of contour levels and label them - all inside 1 minute!
