The United Nations General Assembly declared 2022, the International Year of Artisanal Fisheries and Aquaculture. FAO (Food and Agriculture Organization) is the lead agency for celebrating the year in collaboration with other relevant organizations and bodies of the United Nations system.
WHAT IS MEANT BY ARTISANAL FISHERIES?
Traditional fisheries involving fishing communities (as opposed to commercial companies) employ a modest amount of capital and energy, use small fishing vessels (if any), and make short fishing trips close to the shore, primarily for local consumption. They are sometimes referred to as small-scale fisheries.
Fish constitutes an important source of protein and income in many countries where food security is an issue. Worldwide, around 90% of fishers belong to the artisanal sector (Lancker., et al., 2019)
Artisanal or small-scale fishing employs 96 percent of the world's fishermen. They catch around 35% of the capture fisheries globally, and 90% of the catch for small island emerging markets.
From a food security standpoint, small-scale artisanal fishermen catch 50 to 90 percent of the protein consumed in relatively small, vulnerable economies. This is significantly higher than the global average of 17%.
These data demonstrate how important the sector is for providing jobs and food to billions of people, including many who live in some of the world's most vulnerable areas.
