Gabriel Granados never used to give organ donation much thought. That is until he suffered a horrific electrical shock which left him severely injured. He had to have both his arms amputated at his elbow because they couldn't be saved. In a first for Latin America, the Mexican underwent a mammoth 17-hour operation to attach two new arms donated by a shooting victim. However, the most gruelling part of this story was to come as for the past two years, the 53-year-old has had to endure hours of therapy and tests every day. Exercises with gym balls, writing and turning large cogs have all been part of those strenuous tests. The rehabilitation has been so intensive to help his body get used to the new limbs and stop it from rejecting the foreign tissue. Gabriel has also been taking daily immunosuppressants to support his body's fight. Doctors have warned no matter how successful Granados' operation is, similar procedures in future may be limited due to the ever-decreasing numbers of donors. And Gabriel is now all too aware of the need for that number to stop falling and start rising. The waiting list in Mexico alone for organ donations is estimated to be around 18,000.
