Incumbent Laurie Smith and former undersheriff John Hirokawa are facing off for sheriff of Santa Clara County on November 6. Both candidates have years of experience in law enforcement, working within Santa Clara County's sheriff office.
A huge concern in Santa Clara County is that of law enforcement’s treatment of immigrants. Santa Clara County's Santuary Policy separates law enforcement from working with Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers. However, there have been breaches of that policy in recent times.
Smith’s campaign is centered on protecting the community, advocating for victims and holding the sheriff’s office accountable. Hirokawa’s campaign is centered on building community trust, transparency and advocating for independent oversight of county jails.
On November 6, we will find out which candidate won the general election for sheriff of Santa Clara County.
