In this video, student Okan shares information about the programme content of Creative Media and Game Technologies at Breda University of Applied Sciences. Before starting the first year, students need to choose a discipline such as programming, visual arts, or design. Okan chose design and had to go through an intake process and deliver a portfolio.
The first year consists of four projects. In the first block, Okan had to create a tabletop board game. In the second block, they researched and recreated an arcade game in Unreal Engine. The third block involved creating a school or platformer game with creative freedom. The most interesting block, in Okan's opinion, is the fourth block. In this block, students collaborate with other disciplines to create a project together, working with programmers, visual artists, and designers.
While most of the programme focuses on projects, there are also workshops and lectures provided by experienced lecturers from the industry. These lecturers help students achieve their goals and provide assistance with any problems they may encounter. Theoretical knowledge is gained through these lectures. Additionally, self-study hours are incorporated into the mandatory school hours, allowing students to read books, watch tutorials, and gather knowledge from the internet.
Okan mentions their favorite guest lecture by Mike Sellers, a well-known professor in the gaming industry specializing in system design. He delivered an informative online lecture for the students. Okan's favorite project so far is the one in block C, where they worked on a side scroller platformer game. They learned a lot about implementing a camera in a video game, even though it was not a standard feature for that project.
A typical school week involves two mandatory days where students work on their projects in labs and interact with industry veterans. There is one day dedicated to workshops, lectures, and guilds, which allows students to specialize in their areas of interest. For example, Okan attends the World Building Guild as a designer interested in world building. Outside of these days, there are self-study days where students focus on self-improvement and working on additional documentation.
Overall, this video provides an overview of the programme content and the typical school week for students studying Creative Media and Game Technologies at Breda University of Applied Sciences.
