Torrevieja lies about 50 kilometres south of the city of Alicante and has a population of 90,000, Torrevieja was originally a salt-mining and fishing village as it is located between the sea and two large salt pink lakes, known as Las Salinas de Torrevieja.
All of the local beaches hold the European Blue Flag for ‘Clean Sea’ and excellent facilities. La Mata, Los Locos, El Cura, El Acequión and Los Náufragos together make up the beaches of the Torreviejan coast.
Las Salinas de Torrevieja
A large swathe of Torrevieja’s hinterland is a natural park with two vast salt lagoons.
To the south is the Laguna de Torrevieja, which has a pink tint and continues to be mined for its salt.
Torrevieja is a green town and not only because of its nature reserves. You will also find a great number of squares and parks in which to relax or take a stroll.
The most emblematic of all is the Plaza de la Constitución, which houses the Torrevieja Town Hall and the Inmaculada Concepción Church.
Iglesia de la Inmaculada Concepción
The history of the Church of the Immaculate Conception is marked by the development and history of Torrevieja. The one that we contemplate today, neoclassical, is from 1880 and stands on a site in which previous temples were already present, of which nothing is preserved.
Torrevieja’s name in Spanish translates to “Old Tower”, and this refers to one of the late-medieval watchtowers that are set at intervals along the coast and were here long before there was a town.
The “old tower” is gone, but the stones were used in the late-18th century to build this neoclassical church.
Parque De Las Naciones
The name of the park derives from the fact that it is dedicated to the nations of Europe, mainly represented by a scale reproduction of the map of the European continent. The Park of Nations offers many attractions, facilities and features, and is teeming with wildlife and flora.
