Reagan Frazier is a Los Angeles-based filmmaker and photographer. In this piece she documents the "LA: In Dialogue" collaboration between the Getty Museum, Black Image Center, Inner-City Arts, LA Commons, and Venice Arts. By integrating herself into each cohort, she explores the invisible threads that tie artists to their peers and communities. Taking a multimedia approach to juxtapose seemingly different elements of this story, Frazier follows young artists of color as they explore and develop their artistic talents.
Over five months in 2023, the Getty Museum partnered with four local non-profit organizations across Los Angeles to create educational opportunities for multi-generational artists. During this period of artistic exploration, Getty hosted participant artists at the Getty Center, introduced them to the "Dawoud Bey & Carrie Mae Weems: In Dialogue" exhibition, and arranged a special meet-and-greet with the artists. The project inspired each partner organization to foster a dialogue between artists and their communities, as both Bey and Weems have done throughout their careers. They focused on a variety of topics, such as black and white photography, portraiture, and capturing place. They investigated themes of identity, race, power, and important but often overlooked American histories. Together, the participating artists collaborated with their peers and explored their communities’ stories.
This "LA: In Dialogue" collaboration, exhibition, video, and book were conceived by the J. Paul Getty Museum, produced by The Culture List Inc., and curated by Terrell Tilford at Band of Vices, [ Ссылка ]. This project was championed by the many teaching artists and administrators at Black Image Center, LA Commons, Venice Arts, and Inner-City Arts. This project was made possible with major support from Jordan Schnitzer and The Harold & Arlene Schnitzer CARE Foundation, generous support from Megan and Peter Chernin, and additional support from Jan and Trish de Bont. "LA: In Dialogue" was developed in conjunction with "Dawoud Bey & Carrie Mae Weems: In Dialogue", [ Ссылка ], an exhibition on view at the Getty Museum from April 4 through July 9, 2023. The exhibition was organized by the Grand Rapids Art Museum.
