(3 Sep 2019) A makeshift memorial of has begun to grow at the Santa Barbara harbor in memory of the 34 people who perished when the dive boat "Conception" caught fire off Southern California.
Numerous flowers were hung on a metal fence, while candles line the sidewalk below.
The boat had departed Santa Barbara Harbor on Saturday and the fire broke out about 3 a.m. Monday while it was anchored off Santa Cruz Island, about 90 miles (145 kilometers) west of Los Angeles.
The crew appeared to quickly call for help.
Santa Barbara County Sheriff Bill Brown said Tuesday there were apparently several mayday radio calls before dawn Monday.
And the initial moments of the deadly fire that engulfed the boat are under investigation.
All 34 people who were below decks when the fire erupted are believed to have died.
Remains of 20 have been recovered and as many as six more bodies have been seen still in the submerged wreckage.
Five crew members were rescued by a nearby boat after jumping in the ocean.
The sheriff says the majority of the victims appear to have been from Northern California, including Santa Cruz, San Jose and the San Francisco Bay Area.
