When you have an important interview coming up, it’s always necessary to prepare. Many interviewers ask the same or very similar questions. Ultimately, it all boils down to the same question of why should they hire you. In each of your answers, you should be giving them reasons why you’re a good candidate.
If any employer asks, Why Did You Apply For This Job? You’ll know exactly how to frame your answer after watching this video.
1. List What You Like About The Company
First, start off with listing some things you like about the company. No one wants to work for an organization they don’t like and it’s your chance to show you’ve done your research. You’d be surprised that a fair amount of candidates don’t know much about the company they’re applying to, so this is a great opportunity to stand out!
If you’re someone who doesn’t know much about the place you’re applying to, don't worry! This information is really easy to find. When going onto a company’s website, they normally have an about section. This normally lists their goals, policies and past successes.
To give you an example, Let’s say I was applying to work for our company, JobGet. I could say-
Well I’ve been looking at JobGet for awhile now and I’ve seen that it’s been growing at a rapid rate that is very impressive for a startup. Anytime I look at reviews, all the users have mentioned their great experiences looking for employment through your app. I also saw within your case studies that you’ve worked with Home Depot and Shake Shack to find them qualified applicants which is really cool.
2. Talk About The Role You're Applying For
Next, you should talk about the role you’re applying for. I’d recommend using some of the responsibilities listed on the job description within your answer. You can speak about which of these tasks you’re excited to accomplish and where you know you’ll be a great aspect to the company.
For example, If I’m applying for the position of a content writer at JobGet I could add-
I believe that the content writer position is a perfect fit for me. Helping people is one of my biggest passions, so providing informative content for job seekers is right up my alley. I saw that there wasn’t any limit to how much you can contribute, which makes me very excited that I can give it my all.
3. Explain What Makes You Qualified
List some past experience that is relevant to the position you’re applying for. You want to look like you’ve seriously considered this role and deemed yourself capable of completing the responsibilities mentioned. If you’re applying to be a server at a restaurant, it’s a good idea to mention any background you have in customer service, even if it wasn’t in a food background. There are numerous skills you’ve acquired from your past experience like customer service, public speaking , problem solving, persuasive writing, organization, team work , and attention to detail.
Continuing with our JobGet example, I could mention-
I’ve taken a fair amount of creative writing classes in high school. I did very well in them and always received compliments from my teachers. Though this is writing from more of a professional standpoint, I’m excited to bring my skills to the table.
4. Mention What You Gain
When going into a new experience, you always want to take something out of it. One other point you can make is what you’re going to gain from taking on this role. Is this a stepping stone for a future career or position in this company? Do you want to become a master at some of your skills like customer service or public speaking? This is your chance to show your drive to learn and improve!
To finish our example, when applying for a content writer position at JobGet I could say-
I always have the desire to improve upon myself and gain new skills. I think that writing in a different form will allow me to diversify my content.
To sum everything up, when you’re asking why you’re applying for this job there are four things you should incorporate into your answer.
1. List what you like about the company
2. Talk about the role you’re applying for
3. Explain what makes you qualified
