Don’t time the market. 3 months ago, if we had just continue putting money into the S&P 500 or Total Market Fund, we would’ve still gained more than 10% in our portfolio.

Imagine what would’ve happened if we had bought some FNCMX (Fidelity’s Nasdaq Composite Index Fund)! We kept thinking that it was a bubble and tech would go down and we’d be able to make some gains at the end of the year. Well because of that we missed out on more than 20% returns plus a ton of dividends with Apple, Facebook, Tesla, Microsoft, Shopify, and all the other tech stocks making huge gains.

Moral of the story, don’t think about it. If you’re a long-term investor, don’t wait until the market starts jumping up and up and then succumb to FOMO. Instead, just put everything on autopilot. Remember, the name of the game is passive investing! Fidelity’s got a nice feature that lets you automatically buy some funds on a monthly/quarterly/customized basis as long as you still have money in your core account.

It’s not the most sophisticated and fine-tuned feature out there (you can’t pick specific percentages, and have it happen on a weekly basis based on your deposits), but at least it’s something! So if you’re following a simple 2 to 3 fund portfolio as suggested by JL Collins or the folks from the Boglehead’s guide to investing, this is great to have!
