The idea of god is only one of the ways we motivate ourselves to be good. It’s not the only option.

Do you think a person needs to believe in your God to behave ethically or to be curious about ethics? Okay, I know nothing I say is going to change your mind, so the rest of this video is for everyone else.
Hi, everyone else. Here's a not fun fact. A study by psychologist Will Gervais showed that people tend to find the idea of an atheist mass murderer more believable than a religious one.
Second not fun fact. This is even true of atheists. They're biased against themselves. Here's the problem. There is no evidence to back up the notion that the faithful are more moral or more ethical than the faithless. In fact, a New Scientist article about Gervais' study pointed out that atheists are underrepresented in the prison population and overrepresented as civil rights activists and anti-war protesters.
Not hard evidence, but it hints at atheists being more moral. I'm not going to claim that outright. But I do believe that people who are not beholden to a specific faith have a moral advantage over religious folk. Not to say they're more moral, but the tools they have at their disposal have the potential to be more effective in creating an ethical society. But that's for another video. Come along if you feel like it. Even you, Sammy.
