This time the Seed Savers Kenya team collected the cowpea pods from the farm and dried them without exposing them to direct sunlight. Evans shows us different varieties of cowpea. Inzofu is the most widely grown variety in his community and is very resistant to drought. Eranda is a climbing variety and grows well with maize. Wakamba is a bushy variety that protects soil and improves fertility. After harvesting, they use a traditional method of preservation. They use brick dust, eucalyptus powder, cow dung powder and wood ash to preserve the beans in a ratio of 10 grams of preservative to 1 kilogram of beans. Evans also recommends using glass jars rather than plastic ones.
Seed savers Network (SSN) is a national farmers organisation. SSN works at grassroots level with a mission to conserve agrobiodiversity by strengthening communities and seed systems for improved food and nutritional security. Over the years the network has grown to over 58.000 small scale farmers and established over 43 seed banks with over 100 varieties of beans.
