Want to reduce waste but live in an apartment or small space? Cold composting (a.k.a. lazy composting) could be perfect for you! All you need is a 5-gallon bucket, some food scraps, cardboard, and patience.
How to Make a Cold Compost Bin with a 5-Gallon Bucket
1) Drill small holes around the sides, bottom, and lid of a clean 5-gallon bucket for airflow and drainage.
2) Layer ingredients like a lasagna: Add 3 parts browns (shredded cardboard, paper, dry leaves) to 1 part greens (fruit and veggie scraps, coffee grounds, eggshells). Avoid meat, bones, and dairy.
3) Lightly water the layers so they’re damp, not soaked.
4) Seal the lid and give the bucket a weekly shake to mix and aerate the contents.
In about 6-12 months, you’ll have rich compost for your plants. Simple, low-effort, and perfect for small spaces! 🌱
