Before genetic testing was available, doctors noticed that some families were more susceptible to cancer when exposed to environmental risk factors. According to clinical genetics expert Kenneth Offit of Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, the next era of genetic testing will focus on identifying the link between genes and environmental exposures.
