HAMILTON COUNTY, Ohio (Adam Clements) -- People in Hamilton County are about to see an increase in their sewer bills. Hamilton County Commissioners approved a sewer rate increase on Wednesday, December 17.
The 2015 budget from the Metropolitan Sewer District includes a 5.5% rate increase over the course of the next year. That comes out to about a $.13 daily rate increase for residents in Hamilton County.
District managers say the extra money is an absolute must. Problems like sinkholes end up costing millions to fix, simply because the city's sewer system is so old and run down. A lot of the pipes running underneath the ground are more than 100 years old. An old pipes translates to hire maintenance costs to make sure everything is properly running.
The County Commissioners have been opposed to increasing rates, as the rates have gone up every single year for about a decade. However, a federal court ruling was issued, mandating several improvements and construction projects to upgrade the system.
