In this interview of ‘At HydePark with Indeewari Amuwatte’, former Sri Lankan High Commissioner to India, Austin Fernando, addressed several critical issues concerning Sri Lanka’s political and economic future.
Responding to questions about the pace of change, Fernando acknowledged that transformation is inevitable but will take time. He noted that challenges faced by Sri Lanka—economically, politically, and socially—are complex and will require a sustained effort for a complete turnaround.
The former Diplomat also discussed Sri Lanka’s foreign policy, touching on the "vision statement" articulated by former President Ranil Wickremesinghe. This agreement with India emphasizes economic development and collaboration, with a focus on key projects like the Trincomalee port.
While these projects are beneficial, Fernando noted that Sri Lanka must be cautious about maintaining its sovereignty. Over-dependence on India or any single nation, whether it be China, the United States, or India, could create political friction and diminish Sri Lanka's ability to navigate competing international interests.
