Title: the Taiping

the Taiping is the bio-inspired kinetic & interactive fashion created by the artist siyun. The textile will respond accordingly with a lifelike morphing surface.

Clothing demonstrates identities, spirits, emotions, aesthetics, technology, ethics .etc. that linking the exclusive closed relationship between inside body and the outside world. As much as to say, clothing itself can be seen as a medium, to some extent, an interface to transfer communication. So started with rethinking the definition of COMMUNICATION from the past to the future, what challenges have been address to a garment’s function ? How new information could a garment transmit under the evolution of emerge technology? How could fashion enhance cognitive understanding to the world when integrate with interactive technology?

The design elements refer to a traditional Chinese folk art - The Lingnan Lion Dance which is an expression to the balance between human and nature, a embedded concept of ‘合’ ( means human life being in a highly harmony with nature in the Chinese philosophy saying) within human, nature and technology. A couple of motors were applied to actuate a honeycomb structure’s textile system which were pre-programmed by algorithm to perform movement. The biological kinetic structure provides sufficient flexibility to allow a group of manipulating fabric to act flexibly and stretchly in order to imitate the blinking eyes of lions in the dance.

the Taiping tends to bridge the world of fashion, conceptual art, human computer interaction technology, mechanism, and biological dynamic structure.

This work offer an exploration of communicating way through clothing in the future by investigating textile’s interactive dynamicality as a potential possibility of ‘artificial life’ to pass ‘Language’, ‘Emotion’, and ‘Sense’.

Siyun is a interdisciplinary fashion desiger/ digital artist/ fashion lecturer in Beijing, China. She aims to showcase her core concept of '∞wear' , in which she intergrates responsive interactive system, digital technology, computational design ,etc to re-question the boundary of ‘Fashion’.
Graduated from MA Fashion Design&Technology (Womenswear) at London College of Fashion and BA at Central Academy of Fine Arts in China, she emphasis the essential intersection of fashion, art and the way people life. Siyun is running her own label which is a laboratory and futuristic fashion house to explore the boundless of Fashion. She observes trans-culures, emotion, subconscious, philosophy .etc. as her resource, and trying to use fashion, emerging technology and material as mediums to link the physical and virtual world in order to enhance human’s body and expanse their sensory. Her works has showcased on world-well-known exhibitions, fashion weeks, and awarded in many competitions, etc. She is also the collaborative costume designers with musicians ADUO, Akini jing and international dance group TAO.
