We have Chicago hardy and Brown Turkey fig trees in pots for sale locally. In this video, I review important things to be aware of when purchasing a fig tree. Growing fig trees and containers is quite different than growing them in the ground.
- Fig trees are subtropical plants that love full sunlight (7-8 hours a day), Love the heat, are drought-tolerant, and require minimal watering.
- Watering - fig trees are drought tolerant. They'll be higher sugar content by controlling watering. Less water produces sweeter figs. Fig trees require very good drainage.
- Placing potted fig trees on concrete or stone helps the trees absorb the heat from the thermal mass. Placing them against a southern-facing wall helps protect the potted fig trees and helps them stay warm.
- In colder zones like ours bring the potted fig trees indoors like in the garage or basement or if you have a small greenhouse where the heat can be controlled bring them in before the first frost.
- Potted fig trees can be insulated by digging a hole for the pot in the ground and wrapping the tree with insulation such as burlap something that breathes and doesn't hold in the moisture.
- In Oswego New York we only have 170 days of the growing season. It takes approximately 90 days for a fig to ripen after the fruit has set.
- If grown in a pot it's best to grow the fig as a tree and not as a bush because of limited nutrient resources and root containment.
- In order to get figs to set it's best to pinch the top of the tree by the second week in June. This stimulates the figs to set and then it takes about 90 days for the fix to mature.
- Fig tree should be brought indoors before the first frost. In Oswego, our first frost is about October 18th. Otherwise, you can create a mini greenhouse or use frost covers to protect the fig trees and nights of the frost.
- If you use fertilizer I recommend stopping fertilizing in August to reduce the amount of vegetative growth of the tree. The green limbs that have not been lignified turning them brown are less tolerant of freezing temperatures.
