Tropical storm Ian is about to gain serious steam as it moves into a very light shear environment along with very rish moisture and SST of 30 to near 31C. This leads to very high confidence that Ian will rapidly intensify into a very strong major hurricane in the Caribbean in the next 2 days before reaching Cuba. After it crosses Cuba additional strengthening looks likely and it appears possible that Ian may get close of reaching category 4 status when it makes landfall on the Florida coast in about 5 days.
Hurricane Ian could bring life-threatening impacts to the Cayman islands and western Cuba by Sunday and Monday with very heavy rain, landslides, and storm surge. With catastrophic impacts possible over the west coast of Florida by Thursday including storm surge, very heavy rain, and widespread flooding.
