This is a unique Black Forest Clock. Made by Emilian Wehrle c.1880.
This clock has a 8 day, 8 pipe two tune Clock/Organ movement with a Music box.
After the organ is finished, the movement activates a large 6 tune music box that fills the base of the clock.
The whole musical mechanism is activated by the clock works (every hour), but it is also Coin Operatedand accepts a English Penny.
This clock sat on the counter of the Camerer Kuss retail outlet in Edinburgh, Scotland.
It has clearly seen years of customers who "Put a Penny in the Slot" to hear the clock play...as they selected their new Wehrle trumpeter or Beha cuckoo to take home.
There was a Coin operated clock on the counter of all three Camerer Kuss retails stores. (London, Glasgow and Edinburgh)
The London outlet had a large triple fusee shelf clock made by Johann Baptist Beha. This clock features a cuckoo, monk and angelus strike. It also had a large 6 tune music box in the base, Of course this clock is also coin operated.
The Glasgow clock has not been located.
Camerer Kuss was one of the largest retailers of Emilian Wehrle musical clocks as well as Beha cuckoos and other fine BF clocks.
This is the only known Em.Wehrle Clock with factory coin operation.
To have a music box activated in a Wehrle is extremely rare.
In fact the model #33 is the only other clock made by Wehrle to have music box activation that is known.... but has a smaller 4 tune box. There are only a small handful of #33 trumpeters known. One of which is in the Clock Museum in Furtwangen, Germanyand a couple in private collections.
It can also be argued that the #33 Trumpeter of Sackingen made by Emilian Wehrle, is the "Holy Grail" of Black Forest Clocks.
