A scenic train journey through one of the most treacherous Broad Gauge Rail routes in India, the Subrahmanya-Sakleshpura Ghat section on the South Western Railway that connects the cities of Mangalore and Bangalore.
Travelled in the 16515/6 Yeshwantpur(Bangalore)-Karwar Intercity Express. This is a tri-weekly train and runs via Mangalore.
Banker/Braker engines are attached for the ascent/descent up and down the ghats. Speed is restricted to 30Kmph in the 55 Kilometer-long Ghat section.
This route was earlier a Meter gauge section and was closed for gauge conversion in 1996. Reopened in 2007 and to this day, only one daily train runs through this section apart from the tri-weekly Intercity. Mainly serves freight traffic to/from the New Mangalore Port Trust.
