ATV Security Devices are an often overlooked, but very important part of owning an ATV or Side by Side, which is why you need one of these. Keep your machine locked up with one of these great anti-theft systems.

Heavy Duty Wheel Lock
The heavy duty wheel lock is a fantastic option if you want something that you can use to lock your ATV, then swap and lock your trailer when you hit the trail. The concept is pretty basic. You Clasp the lock around any wheel, and it keeps your machine from being able to roll. As for the disadvantageous, there is one really big one…and that is literally how big it is. These types of ATV security systems are pretty big and pretty heavy. So while that is no big deal if you want to keep it locked up at the cabin or at home, it can be a problem if you want to keep it locked up while camping, at a trail stop, etc. Unlike most other options discussed below, it will not easily fit in something like a backpack.
Anti-Theft Vibration Alarm
These handy little devices make a great anti-theft system if you are looking for something obnoxious. They at very similar to a car alarm in the sense that it comes with a keypad, and makes a loud noise when it senses vibration. They are great for drawing attention to your ATV, and the adjustable sensitivity lets you have more control over how quickly the alarm goes off. The downside to most of these is they are not waterproof, so if you go with a method like this use some velcro so you can easily remove it from your ATV when you are going to ride.
Disc Lock Anti-Theft System
These are great if you are looking for some of the features from both the first and second system discussed above. This type of ATV lock combines the wheel lock method of the first device, with the motion sensor alarm of the second device. What’s even better is unlike the motion sensor discussed above, this one is actually waterproof! The downside to this option is you could cause some real damage if you forget to remove it before trying to drive away. It does come with a “reminder rope” however, so as long as you don’t get lazy or rushed and forget it, you should be ok.
Handlebar Brake
This type of lock is probably one of my personal favorites. The system basically holds your hand brake to the handlebar, locking your wheel. They are convenient, very simple, and take up very little space when not in use. There is no batteries, no crazy parts, just a simple locking device that (if you buy the right one) is waterproof & rustproof. The concern to keep in mind with this one is to ensure you purchase one that will fit your machine. So with a device like this, I always recommend making sure you can return it before you initially purchase it in case it does not fit your ATV well and can be slipped off.
The Old Cable/Chain & Padlock
This is probably one of the oldest methods around and still ends up being my go to most of the time (at least for now). The idea is basic, you wrap the cable around your ATV, then around anything that can’t be moved (such as a light pole, a vehicle, or another ATV or Side by Side). The one big downfall for this method is the large chain. While one chain can be used to lock up multiple ATVs, it is a rather large and awkward item to have in your backpack or carry around with you when you are camping or on the trail.
Do you have experience with an ATV or UTV locking system? Please leave a comment below and let us know your thoughts. Otherwise, as always thanks watching and I hope to see you on the trail!
