here is description:
Introduced in 1984, the Apple Macintosh was undoubtedly a different way of doing personal computing. An effective marketing campaign had set them apart from IBM's conservative business-focused PCs, and their penchant for giving free Apple IIc's and IIe's to schools across the country even further endeared them to people likely to think IBM's approach was too cold and impersonal.
Regardless of the sociopolitical forces at work in the early Mac vs. PC debate, it's clear that Apple knew from the start how to hold the hands of their new customers. Not only did they popularize the graphical user interface and the mouse, but their user manuals went the extra mile with full-color photos and plenty of instruction aimed at the technological novice.
Apple appears to have taken it one step further with this cassette, included with the first Macs: on side one, "A Guided Tour of Macintosh," covering operating system basics; and on side two, introducing the user to the included MacWrite and MacPaint applications. Not presented here was a companion application that ran on the user's Macintosh while the tape played. Three tones play before each section on the tape; the user is instructed to click their mouse on a button as soon as they hear the third tone, and then the on-screen lesson is synchronized with the material on the tape.
Although this archivist was a PC user until about ten years ago, a similar educational aid on the PC side does not immediately come to mind (though if there is one, please leave a comment with more information). While this sort of thing became commonplace in the "multimedia" era, where the audio instructions could be accessed from CD-ROM, Apple appears to be the leader of the pack on this sort of thing, by a wide margin.
Often the focus here on Uncommon Ephemera is a sort of cheesiness or anachronism in the presented material, a comedic look at how things aren't the way they were when the material was released anymore. And perhaps there's an element of that in the new-age music that bookends the sides and sections of this tape, trying to appeal to a demographic that often self-identified as significantly smarter and more cultured than the average person. But on the whole, this is a quality piece of educational media, a well-done instructional program by a maverick computer company in an often David-and-Goliath-esque fight for the market with Big Blue.
