Oberto Manuel Chavarría Leaño, a 31-year-old former Colombian soldier, traveled to Ukraine in December 2023 to join the International Legion in the fight against Russia. After leaving the Colombian army, he sought a more prosperous future for his family. In Ukraine, he experienced snow, made new friends, and shared his journey on social media, believing that becoming a mercenary was a promising path.

His main motivation was the promise of high pay to defend Ukraine. However, on February 11, 2024, his platoon was attacked by Russian drones, and Oberto was killed alongside three others. He was part of the Karpatska Sich Battalion, which includes several Colombian mercenaries. He leaves behind an 8-year-old daughter, and his family is hoping for support to repatriate his body.
