Critical Response Line
Our Trust & Safety team is available around the clock to take care of our community. DMV and Background Checks
Every driver is screened before they’re permitted to drive on our platform, starting with professional third-party background and DMV checks.
The criminal background check includes national and county-level databases and records stretching back a minimum of 7 years for review of convictions in California, and longer in some other jurisdictions. Among other things, Lyft disqualifies driver applicants for violent crime, felony, sexual offense, or drug-related convictions that appear on a background check. Learn more.
Vehicle Inspections
Cars get a thorough screening, too, thanks to our 19-point inspection. We require cars to be no more than 12 years old before hitting the road. Learn more.
Zero-Tolerance Policy
Lyft maintains a zero-tolerance drug and alcohol policy for Lyft drivers. To report suspicions of intoxicant use by a Lyft driver, email us or call (855) 865-9553.
Two-way Ratings
You’ve got the power. Passengers and drivers rate each other after every ride. If you rate someone 3 stars or below, you’ll never be matched with them again. Lyft takes all user ratings and driver feedback very seriously.
Lyft Insurance Protection Plan
Our first-of-its-kind insurance plan provides drivers with additional coverages, from the moment they flip into driver mode until their last passenger of the day is dropped off. Our $1M liability and uninsured/underinsured policies will apply as primary to a driver’s personal automobile insurance policy when matched with a passenger. Learn more

DMV Check
Lyft uses a third party to check every potential driver’s driving record. You are ineligible to drive on the Lyft platform if any of the below are found on your driving record:
More than three moving violations in the past three years (e.g. accidents, traffic light violations)
A major moving violation in the past three years (e.g., driving on a suspended license, reckless driving)
A DUI or other drug-related driving violation in the last seven years
Any driving-related convictions in the last seven years (e.g. hit-and-run, felonies involving a vehicle)
Background Check
Every driver is screened for criminal offenses and driving incidents. Lyft’s criminal background check is provided by a third party and includes national and county-level databases, and when necessary, local courthouse record checks. You will be ineligible to drive on the Lyft platform if, among other things, the background check results reveal convictions for any of the following in the past seven years:
A violent crime
A felony
A drug-related offense
A sexual offense
Certain theft or property damage offenses
In New York City, DMV and criminal background checks are conducted by the Taxi and Limousine Commission (TLC) according to their licensing standards, instead of through Lyft.
More restrictive standards may apply based on local requirements specific to ridesharing. Lyft reserves the right to disqualify a driver at any time should either their driving record or background check reveal any of the above items, or for any other safety-related reason at Lyft’s discretion.
