U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo condemned Chinese human rights abuses Wednesday, as "one of the core challenges that we've identified from the Chinese Communist Party."
Speaking to reporters at the State Department, Pompeo listed regions that had suffered "consistent violation of the most basic and fundamental human rights for their own people." Pompeo added Hong Kong to that list.
Pompeo also dismissed challenges posed by North Korea's display of ICBMs during a weekend parade.
"The agreement, the understandings, albeit not achieving our ultimate objective in North Korea, has certainly led to reduce risk from the United States versus where we would have been had we continued on the path that the previous administration had engaged in," he said.
North Korea, marking the 75th anniversary of its ruling party on Saturday, paraded a variety of weapons systems, unveiling what appeared to be an intercontinental ballistic missile that is larger than any of the North’s known ICBMs. It also displayed what was likely an upgraded version of a missile that can be fired from submarines.
