Rainforest 101 - National Geographic | Rainforest Documentary
Rainforests are the Earth's oldest living ecosystems, some dating back over 70 million years to the time of dinosaurs. While the dinosaurs are long gone, rainforests continue to thrive on every continent except Antarctica. These forests are categorized into two types: temperate and tropical. Temperate rainforests are found in cooler, coastal, mountainous regions, whereas tropical rainforests are located in warmer climates near the equator.
Rainforests are the wettest places on Earth, receiving up to 33 feet of rain each year. This constant precipitation creates an exceptionally lush and biologically diverse habitat. Despite covering only 6% of the Earth's surface, rainforests are home to more than half of the world's plant and animal species. This incredible biodiversity provides numerous benefits, including food, everyday products, and essential medicines. In fact, about 70% of plants used in cancer treatments are found exclusively in rainforests.
Rainforests also play a crucial role in stabilizing the planet's climate. Their dense vegetation absorbs large amounts of sunlight and converts carbon dioxide into oxygen, supplying approximately 40% of the Earth's breathable air. However, these ancient ecosystems are under threat. Over the past few centuries, economic inequalities, human development, and the demand for natural resources have led to alarming rates of deforestation. If current trends continue, rainforests may disappear entirely within the next century.
The fight to save these vital ecosystems is not over. Through educational campaigns, sustainable logging practices, and cooperation with local communities, we can slow deforestation and help preserve rainforests for future generations. Join us in exploring the importance of rainforests and how we can protect them!
