Tremendous labour shortages and rising cost of living are the most important issues facing the country, Liberal Senator Dean Smith says, as he argues why his private senator's bill could remedy both problems.
Mr Smith tabled a private senator's bill to the Senate which aims to help allow more pensioners back into the workforce.
"At the moment aged pensioners and veteran pensioners can earn up to $300 a fortnight through the work bonus scheme without adversely affecting their pension," Mr Smith said.
Mr Smith said his bill will allow "aged pensioners and veterans to earn twice as much ... to $600 a fortnight".
"For a couple that would allow them to earn up to $1200 a fortnight without facing any reduction in their pension – this is an immediate win-win solution ... which is before the parliament now."
