The cinematography for Barry Jenkin's best picture winner Moonlight has been broadly praised. It features more slick and 'beautiful' visuals that are not par for the course of films of this subject matter. While the camera work is impressive throughout, this video focusses on one scene in particular, the one where Mahershala Ali's Juan teaches a young Chiron how to swim at an overcast Miami beach. I wanted to delve deep into how the cinematography is used to convey specific meanings and emotions, so this video looks at the framing and camera angle of the scene, while also taking into account the wider context of it, to look at how it conveys Chiron's vulnerability, and the relationship between the two characters.
