One of the classics.
Axelay, what a name, is a horizontal and vertically scrolling shoot em up that heavily uses the Snes Mode 7 to create and affect of background movement.
At the start of every level, you get to pick your weapons, and you can change between them with the press of a button. These weapons also works as a shield, they will get destroyed if you get hit instead of the normal one-hit-kill which forces you to use one of the other weapons.
It is one of those blink and you will die hard games, and some of those bullet patterns are extremely hard to avoid.
You can choose between three difficulties at the start of the game (Easy, Normal, Hard), and when you complete the game it will loop to the next one. Complete Hard and it will loop to Extreme and it will show a slightly different ending, telling us to wait for Axelay 2 which sadly never got made.
