Welcome to Ballotpedia's Daily Brew, your nonpartisan and unbiased source for political news. It’s August 20, 2024.
On Aug. 13, Missouri Secretary of State Jay Ashcroft (R) certified three ballot measures on abortion, minimum wage, and sports betting. The measures include a constitutional amendment on abortion rights, which would establish protections for reproductive freedom up to the point of fetal viability. Additionally, voters will decide on legalizing sports betting and increasing the minimum wage to $15 per hour by 2026, along with mandating paid sick leave.
In total, seven statewide ballot measures have been certified for the 2024 ballot in Missouri.
In the 37 states that have held primaries so far this year, 136 state legislative incumbents have lost, which equates to 3.4% of all incumbents seeking re-election. This is lower than the 174 incumbent losses at the same point in 2022.
Four of the defeated incumbents were legislative leaders, including the Hawaii House Speaker, Idaho Senate President Pro Tempore , Oklahoma Senate Majority Leader, and West Virginia Senate President.
Republican incumbents have lost at a higher rate compared to Democrats in this year's primaries.
We close today’s update with a reminder on upcoming voter participation deadlines. Voters in Alaska, Florida, Massachusetts, Oklahoma, Rhode Island and Wyoming all have important deadlines over the next two weeks.
