5. Chateau Miranda
Sometimes, castles can just get so creepy, that they just need to be demolished despite historical significance. This seems to be the case of Chateau miranda which was completely abandoned in 1991 and became a target for vandalism and urban exploring of course. The castle wasn’t built until 1866 but the construction was delayed for a long period of time, finally being finished in 1907. The builders of the chateau wouldn’t enjoy it for long and the building was occupied by German Forces during WWII. It became an orphanage for sick children afterwards until and just a large variety of creepy stuff happened here!
4. Houska Castle, Czech Republic
A castle in Czech Rep ublic allegedly covers a pit that leads to directly to the gates of hell. King Ottokar from the 1200’s offered to excuse anyone from their crimes if they agreed to be lowered into the pit. The first one to offer, let out a panick stricken scream, begging for mercy. Apparently, when had been brought the to surface, he completely lost his mind. Disfigured ghosts and even a human frog hybrid were believed to have been seen here. One thing we should not about this place is, that it seems to be designed in a sense to keep things in, rather than to keep things out. It’s best just to stay away.
3. Dragsholm Castle, Denmark
Possibly the most haunted place in Denmark is known as the Dragsholm Castle in Zeland. This is reportedly crawling with ghosts. One of them is a white lady who fell in love with a local commoner man which her father certainly didn’t approve of. This father really didn’t want his daughter to bring any disgrace to the family and he locked her in up in her room so she could never see him again. A few centuries later, when workers were making some restorations, they came across her skeleton wearing a white dress. The Baroque style castle also served as a prison and numerous witnesses report seeing at least 3 ghosts total here, including lord bothwell who known for his abduction of Queen Mary of Scots and is buried at the chapel at Dragsholm.
2. Frankenstein’s Castle
We’re all aware of the story of Frankenstein, written by Mary Shelley in 1818 but what was the setting she was inspired by? The extremely creepy Frankenstein’s Castle, located in Darmstadt Germany! It is a real place and it was built in the mid 1200’s. After it was built, the people who lived here took the last name of Frankenstein and they were the nobility of the area until the 20th century. The spooky place is located in a landscape covered in dark forests that’s been shrouded with mystery and legend. Some claim, there used to even be a dragon that lived in the garden, where an epic battle took place.
Dracula’s Real Castle, Romania
We're sure you’re familiar with Count Dracula, the legendary vampire. The Bran castle which is quite creepy, is advertised as his castle but there’s not true evidence of him ever living there. Historians know the true residence was at Poenari on a remote clifftop that’s much less easy on the eyes and was constructed by slaves. He even constructed a different palace/fortress to defend against the Ottomans later on in his life. Many tourists are tricked into believing that he resided at Bran Castle, when the reality is that he might have just visited it a couple of times. It would also be extremely difficult for tourists to access the real lair of Dracula that requires a steep hike.
